Getting from Antipaxos to Ithaca

If you are heading to Ithaca from Antipaxos you are making your way from a tiny island in the Ionian Sea to another island in the same sea, just a short distance to the south. It is the legendary home of Odysseus with a deep central bay at Vathy that is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Ionian.

Take the ferry

There are no direct scheduled ferries from Antipaxos to Ithaca. Antipaxos has no ferry port of its own and is accessible only by sea taxi from Gaios on Paxos. Getting to Ithaca means taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Igoumenitsa and then driving south to either Patras for the ferry to Ithaca via Kefalonia, which takes around 3 hours, or to Astakos for the direct ferry to Ithaca, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. The drive from Igoumenitsa to Patras takes around 3.5 to 4 hours and to Astakos around 2.5 to 3 hours.

Getting there by air

Ithaca has no airport. The nearest airport is Kefalonia. Antipaxos has no airport either. Taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Corfu and flying to Athens and then Athens to Kefalonia, followed by the short ferry from Sami to Ithaca taking around 20 to 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 7 to 8 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Igoumenitsa and drive south to Astakos for the direct ferry to Ithaca. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural western Greece connection. If you prefer to fly, take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, ferry to Corfu, fly to Athens and then fly to Kefalonia and take the short ferry across to Ithaca from Sami.
