Getting from Chios to Agathonisi
If you are heading to Agathonisi from Chios you are making your way from one of the most overlooked islands in the northeastern Aegean to one of the most remote islands in the Dodecanese group, relatively close in regional terms. It has almost no tourist infrastructure and an atmosphere of complete isolation.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Chios to Agathonisi. A practical sea approach is to take the ferry from Chios to Samos and then the local ferry to Agathonisi, which runs 3 to 5 times a week from Samos and takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. This keeps the journey within the northeastern Aegean and avoids Athens entirely.
Getting there by air
Agathonisi has no airport. The nearest airports are Samos and Leros. Chios has its own airport with daily connections from Athens. Flying from Chios to Athens and then Athens to Samos or Leros, followed by the local ferry to Agathonisi, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Chios to Samos and then the local ferry across to Agathonisi. It is the most natural approach and avoids Athens entirely. Check the ferry schedule from Samos before planning as the service runs only a limited number of times per week. Build flexibility into your plans as Agathonisi is not the easiest island to leave in a hurry. If you prefer to fly, take the flight from Chios to Athens and then fly to Samos or Leros and connect to Agathonisi by local ferry.
