Getting from Dokos to Halkidiki
If you are heading to Halkidiki from Dokos you are making your way from an uninhabited rocky island in the Saronic Gulf to a three-pronged peninsula southeast of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, with Kassandra in the west for long sandy beaches, Sithonia in the middle for quieter waters and the monastic peninsula of Athos in the east.
Take the ferry
There are no scheduled ferries from Dokos. Dokos has no ferry service and is accessible only by water taxi from Hydra, Spetses or Ermioni, with the crossing from Hydra taking around 30 minutes. Halkidiki has no ferry connections as it is a mainland peninsula. Getting there means arranging a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, taking the Saronic ferry from Hydra to Piraeus, which takes around 1 hour 5 minutes to 2 hours, and then flying or driving north to Thessaloniki, from where Halkidiki is accessible by rental car or KTEL bus.
Getting there by air
Halkidiki has no airport. The nearest airport is Thessaloniki, around 60 to 90 kilometres from the various parts of the peninsula. Dokos has no airport. Taking the water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and flying from Athens to Thessaloniki gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. From Thessaloniki a rental car is essential for getting around Halkidiki comfortably. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Arrange a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra before leaving the island, take the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and fly from Athens to Thessaloniki, then rent a car at the airport. Pre-arrange your water taxi departure as you cannot hail a boat once you are on Dokos. Halkidiki is large and spread out enough that a car is essential for getting between beaches, villages and the different peninsulas.
