Getting from Dokos to Kythnos
If you are heading to Kythnos from Dokos you are making your way from an uninhabited rocky island in the Saronic Gulf to an island in the western Cyclades, on the opposite side of Greece. It has over 60 beaches and a medieval village at Driopida that hardly anyone outside Greece knows about.
Take the ferry
There are no scheduled ferries from Dokos. Dokos has no ferry service and is accessible only by water taxi from Hydra, Spetses or Ermioni, with the crossing from Hydra taking around 30 minutes. Kythnos is served primarily from Lavrio on the southeastern Attica coast. Getting there means arranging a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, taking the Saronic ferry from Hydra to Piraeus, which takes around 1 hour 5 minutes to 2 hours, and then taking a taxi to Lavrio, around 30 minutes from Athens Airport, for the ferry to Kythnos, which takes around 1 hour 10 minutes and runs up to 5 times daily in summer.
Getting there by air
Kythnos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Dokos has no airport. Taking the water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and then taking a taxi to Lavrio for the ferry to Kythnos gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Arrange a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra before leaving the island, take the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and take a taxi to Lavrio for the ferry across to Kythnos. The proximity of Lavrio to Athens Airport makes it a convenient connection that avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely. Pre-arrange your water taxi departure as you cannot hail a boat once you are on Dokos.
