Getting from Dokos to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Dokos you are making your way from an uninhabited rocky island in the Saronic Gulf to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of Greece. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Take the ferry
There are no scheduled ferries from Dokos. Dokos has no ferry service and is accessible only by water taxi from Hydra, Spetses or Ermioni, with the crossing from Hydra taking around 30 minutes. Getting to Amorgos means arranging a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, taking the Saronic ferry from Hydra to Piraeus, which takes around 1 hour 5 minutes to 2 hours, and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.
Getting there by air
Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Dokos has no airport. Taking the water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and then boarding the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 12 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Arrange a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra before leaving the island, take the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and board the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. Pre-arrange your water taxi departure as you cannot hail a boat once you are on Dokos. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm.
