Getting from Santorini to Skopelos

The contrast between Santorini and Skopelos is about as sharp as Greece gets. Santorini is volcanic rock, white plaster and caldera views. Skopelos is dense pine forest, green hillsides and a Chora full of 123 churches, by the local count. Where Santorini has been shaped almost entirely by tourism, Skopelos has retained a character that feels genuinely its own. The Mamma Mia films brought it brief international attention but the island never built itself around that moment, which is one of the reasons it is still worth going. The beaches are excellent, the old town is beautiful and the pace of life is exactly what most people are looking for after a few days in Santorini.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Santorini to Skopelos. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece and the ferry networks do not connect them. Skopelos is served by ferries from Volos and Mantoudi on the mainland and from the neighbouring islands of Skiathos and Alonissos, none of which are reachable directly from Santorini without going through Athens first. The indirect route via Piraeus, Athens and Volos takes the better part of a day and involves several hours of road travel. Flying is the only realistic option.

What about flying?

Skopelos does not have an airport. The nearest airport is Skiathos, around 15 kilometres to the southwest, which has regular connections to Athens. The journey from Santorini goes Santorini to Athens and then Athens to Skiathos, followed by the short ferry to Skopelos which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours door to door. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Fly to Skiathos via Athens and take the ferry across to Skopelos. It is the only practical approach and works smoothly in both directions. Give yourself at least three nights on Skopelos. Walk up through the Chora in the evening, find a taverna on one of the side streets and spend your days working through the beaches. Limnonari on the south coast is the one to prioritise.
