About Helena Paparizou

Early Life

Helena Paparizou, born Eleni Paparizou on January 31, 1982, in Borås, Sweden, was the youngest child of Greek parents from the Karditsa region who had settled in Sweden in 1970. She grew up in Örgryte, Gothenburg, and enrolled in various arts schools as a teenager. In 1998, thirteen of her close friends died in the Gothenburg nightclub fire, a tragedy that led her to briefly step away from singing, having been kept home from the party by her mother. She went on to study theater, acting, television, and directing at the Art Performing School.

Musical Style & Sound

Paparizou performs across pop, pop rock, Laïko, dance-pop, and electronica, a blend rooted in her earliest work as part of the Laïko-Eurodance duo Antique. That hybrid style, mixing traditional Greek folk elements with Western dance and pop production, became her signature sound and helped distinguish her from more strictly Laïko or straightforwardly pop-oriented Greek artists.

Career Rise

Paparizou launched her career in Sweden in 1999 as part of Antique alongside childhood friend Nikos Panagiotidis, releasing five studio albums between 1999 and 2003 and representing Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2001. After Antique disbanded in 2003, she signed a solo contract with Sony Music Greece, and her debut single, "Anapandites Kliseis," reached number one on the Greek Top 50 Singles Chart. She moved permanently to Greece in 2004, and her debut solo album, "Protereotita," was later certified double platinum. In 2005, she represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with "My Number One," winning the contest, the first Greek victory in its history, and a result that transformed her career. Her subsequent albums, "Iparhi Logos" (2006), "The Game of Love" (2006), and "Vrisko To Logo Na Zo" (2008), all reached number one in Greece and went platinum, with her fifth album, "Giro Apo T' Oneiro" (2010), also certified platinum.

Diaspora Impact

Paparizou's own upbringing as a Greek raised in Sweden gives her a natural, lived connection to diaspora audiences, and her Eurovision win brought Greek music global visibility on a scale few Greek artists have matched. She toured Europe performing in every country that awarded her the maximum 12 points at Eurovision, and attempted an English-language crossover career that charted in several countries abroad, extending her reach well beyond both Greece and the traditional diaspora touring circuit.
