Nick Galis is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players in European history. Early Life

Nick Galis was born Nikolaos Georgalis on July 23, 1957, in Union City, New Jersey, in the United States. His parents were Greek immigrants who had moved to America from Rhodes. Growing up in a Greek American household, Galis remained closely connected to Greek culture and heritage.

As a child, he initially trained as a boxer, following in the footsteps of his father. However, he later shifted his focus to basketball, where he quickly showed exceptional athletic ability and competitive determination.

College Basketball Career

Galis attended Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where he played college basketball from 1975 to 1979. During his time at Seton Hall, he developed into one of the most talented scorers in college basketball.

He averaged more than 27 points per game during his college career, finishing as one of the top scorers in the history of the program. His combination of speed, ball control, and scoring instincts made him extremely difficult for defenders to stop.

Despite his impressive college performance, Galis was selected late in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. However, an ankle injury during training camp prevented him from securing a long term place on the team.

Move to Greece

After leaving the United States, Galis accepted an offer to play professional basketball in Greece. In 1979, he joined the Greek club Aris Thessaloniki, a team that would soon become one of the strongest in Europe.

At the time, basketball in Greece did not yet have the popularity it would later achieve. Galis’s arrival changed that dramatically.

Dominance in Greek Basketball

With Galis as its star player, Aris Thessaloniki became the most dominant team in Greek basketball during the 1980s. Playing alongside other talented athletes, including Panagiotis Giannakis, Galis led Aris to numerous league championships and cup victories.

He became famous for his extraordinary scoring ability. Galis consistently averaged more than 30 points per game and frequently scored over 40 points in individual matches. His style of play combined quick drives to the basket, accurate mid range shooting, and fearless attacks against defenders.

Many fans remember the era of Aris games in Thessaloniki as a time when entire cities would stop to watch the team play.

International Success with Greece

Nick Galis achieved his greatest fame while playing for the Greek national team. His most historic moment came during the 1987 European Championship, also known as EuroBasket 1987, which was hosted in Greece.

During the tournament, Galis led the Greek team with outstanding performances, averaging more than 37 points per game. In the final against the Soviet Union, Greece achieved a dramatic victory, winning the championship and securing the country’s first major international basketball title.

The victory sparked massive celebrations across Greece and permanently changed the popularity of basketball in the country. Galis became a national icon overnight.

Later Professional Career

After more than a decade with Aris Thessaloniki, Galis later played for Panathinaikos, another major Greek basketball club. Although he was already an established legend by this time, he continued to perform at a high level and remained one of the league’s top scorers.

He eventually retired from professional basketball in the mid 1990s after an extraordinary career that included numerous scoring records and championships.

Nick Galis was known for his aggressive offensive style and remarkable consistency as a scorer. He had a strong, balanced physique that allowed him to attack defenders and finish difficult shots near the basket.
