About the Beach
Sykamia is a stunning and very large beach on the eastern coast of Kea, famous for its wild beauty and the large tamarisk trees that provide abundant natural shade. The shore is a mix of sand and pebbles, and the water is an incredible, deep turquoise that feels very fresh and invigorating. Because it faces east, it is often hit by the summer meltemi winds, which can create some impressive waves. Access is via a long and winding dirt road, which helps keep the crowds away even during the busiest months. There are no facilities or shops here, so the environment is entirely natural and silent. It is a favorite for those who want a "Robinson Crusoe" experience on an island that is otherwise quite close to Athens. The scale of the bay and the clarity of the sea make it one of the most impressive natural landmarks on Kea.
