History

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Lincoln, Nebraska was established in 1945, founded by Greek immigrants who had made the Nebraska capital their home and gathered together in that year to preserve their Orthodox Christian faith and Hellenic heritage on the Great Plains. The Nebraska Legislature formally recognized the parish in 2025 on the occasion of its eightieth anniversary, acknowledging eight decades of spiritual, cultural, and community service to the people of Lincoln.

 

The parish is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the great feast of March 25 on which the Church commemorates the Archangel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would bear the Son of God, a feast that also carries the significance of Greek Independence Day, uniting the sacred and the national in a single annual celebration of particular meaning for Greek Orthodox communities across America.

 

From its founding the parish has evolved from a congregation rooted in the immigrant Greek community of Lincoln into a diverse and welcoming Pan-Orthodox family, described by its own members as living the ancient faith in modern times. Services draw together faithful from Greek, American, and many other backgrounds, and the parish has embraced a spirit of openness to all who seek the fullness of the Orthodox Christian tradition in the Cornhusker State.
