History
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of Sacramento, California was founded in 1920, when approximately fifty Greek community leaders came together to form an Orthodox parish and purchased property for a future church, making it the oldest Greek Orthodox parish between the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City. In 1921 a first full-time priest was assigned to the community and construction began on the first sanctuary on N Street, a building designed by George Sellon, the first architect for the State of California. That original church served the Sacramento Greek community for more than a decade before being formally consecrated and named for the Annunciation of the Theotokos in 1934.
As the parish continued to grow through the postwar decades, a new and larger facility was needed. Construction began in 1951 on the present sanctuary and hall at Alhambra and F Street in the East Sacramento neighborhood across from McKinley Park, and in 1956 the new Annunciation church was consecrated during the Clergy-Laity Assembly of the Fourth Archdiocese District by His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Olympus. By 1962 the growing community required a second priest, and in 1963 Annunciation launched the first Greek food festival in Sacramento, an institution that celebrated its fiftieth year in 2013 and has become one of the most beloved annual Hellenic cultural events in the California capital region.
In June 2019, the Annunciation Senior League dedicated a monument at 620 North Street honoring the site of the original church, a five-foot bronze pedestal bearing a replica of the first Greek Orthodox church in Sacramento with bronze footsteps leading to its base, commemorating the contribution of the Greek immigrant pioneers to the Sacramento community.
As the mother church of the Greek Orthodox parishes in Modesto, Stockton, Elk Grove, Redding, and Roseville, California, and Reno, Nevada, the Annunciation has served as the institutional heart of Greek Orthodox life across a vast swath of northern California and the Great Basin.
