History

Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church of Roseville, California was founded in 1998 by the Reverend Father Demetrius Dogias, of blessed memory, and a handful of dedicated Orthodox Christians who envisioned a parish community in the Sierra foothills east of Sacramento. The Reverend Father Cosmas Halikakis was assigned as the mission's first priest. In 2000 the parish was formally dedicated to Saint Anna, the maternal grandmother of Jesus Christ and mother of the Theotokos, with her feast day, the Dormition of Saint Anna on July 25, established as the parish's primary celebration. The first feast day liturgy was celebrated in 2001 at the parish's early home on North Sunrise Avenue.

In 2005 the parish received a Holy Relic of Saint Anna from the Skete of Saint Anna on Mount Athos, Greece, a gift of profound spiritual significance that led to the parish being distinguished as a Metropolis Shrine dedicated to the sanctity of marriage and family. Additional relics of Saints Joachim and Anna were received in 2007. That same year, Founders' Hall was completed at 1001 Stone Canyon Drive, a property that had been gifted to the parish, giving the community its first permanent home.

Over the following years the parish grew steadily in membership and ministries, drawing faithful from the greater Roseville area and throughout Placer County. Though originally founded by a small group of Greek Americans, the community grew to represent more than a dozen nationalities, a reflection of the universal character of Orthodox Christianity in America. In October 2021 a groundbreaking was celebrated by more than 400 clergy and faithful for a new Byzantine-style sanctuary. Construction was completed in the summer of 2023 through the intercessions of Saints Joachim and Anna and the generosity of the parish's stewards, and the opening of the Holy Sanctuary took place on July 2, 2023, the Feast of Saint John Maximovich, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, with Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco as the chief celebrant.

Today, Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church and Metropolis Shrine stands at 1001 Stone Canyon Drive in Roseville as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, serving approximately 250 Orthodox Christian households with a vibrant liturgical life, active ministries for all ages, and a deep commitment to the faith, the family, and the broader Roseville community.
