History
Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church of Elk Grove, California was founded in 1988, when a small group of Orthodox Christians in the Sacramento Valley dedicated itself to the task of organizing a parish to serve the faithful of the region's rapidly growing southern suburbs. Services were first held on August 7, 1988, in a rented hall, marking the community's beginning. In April of 1989 the congregation moved to a warehouse on Dino Drive in Elk Grove, which the members converted into a chapel, giving the young parish its first dedicated worship space. That same year the parishioners voted on the name of their patron saint, choosing Saint Katherine of Alexandria, the beloved fourth-century martyr renowned for her learning, beauty, and fidelity to Christ.
On September 26, 1993, groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the current church site in the Laguna West neighborhood, and construction proceeded on the permanent church building and hall that have served the community ever since. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Sacramento, itself a century-old mother church of the Sacramento Valley Greek Orthodox community, formally recognized Saint Katherine as a daughter parish in 1995 at a gala coinciding with the Sacramento church's seventy-fifth anniversary, a milestone that formalized the bond between the two communities.
