History
Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church of Williamsburg, Michigan is a testament to what a small, determined group of faithful can build when they refuse to let geography stand in the way of their spiritual lives. Before 1999, Orthodox Christians in the Traverse City area had no local church to call home. Services were held on an infrequent basis, and the nearest Orthodox parish was a three-hour drive away in Grand Rapids.
That changed in the fall of 1999, when a group of Orthodox Christians gathered at the First Congregational Church to discuss the possibility of establishing a mission parish in northern Michigan. The effort was spearheaded by Harriet Rennie, with the blessing of Metropolitan Nicholas and the support of Father John Paul of Ann Arbor and Father Jim Bogdan of Grand Rapids. In October of that same year, the first Divine Liturgy was held and the community's first newsletter was published. What began as Thursday night gatherings eventually grew into Saturday services and then Sunday Liturgies, first with a series of temporary priests and then, in 2008, with the assignment of Father Iakovos Olechnowicz as the parish's first permanent priest.
On November 15, 2009, the Traverse City Greek Orthodox Mission Church was officially sanctioned by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and given the name Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church. In 2010, Father Ciprian Streza was assigned as pastor and has led the parish ever since, shepherding the community through its most ambitious chapter yet. Under his leadership the parish grew to approximately 60 active families and set its sights on building a permanent home.
After extensive searching that involved driving off-road, flying over the region by plane, and analyzing maps, the parish settled on a beautiful five-acre parcel of land overlooking East Grand Traverse Bay in Williamsburg. While fundraising was underway, the community broke ground on Angels Organic Community Garden on the property in the spring of 2012, a ministry that has since become a landmark in the Traverse City area providing healthy food to those in need. A cornerstone service was held on April 23, 2019, and in August 2019 the historic Thyranoixia, the opening of the church doors, marked the beginning of a new era. The community had raised $3.5 million of a $4 million goal to build what would become the first full-time Orthodox church in northern Michigan.
In the summer of 2019, a defining moment arrived when a 42,000-pound dome was lifted into place atop the new church building, visible for miles along US-31. Today, Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church stands at 7111 US-31 North in Williamsburg as a permanent home for Orthodox Christians throughout northern Michigan, a community that grew from a handful of scattered faithful into a flourishing parish by God's grace and the perseverance of those who refused to worship alone.
