The parish became widely known beginning in July 2015, when several drops of moisture appeared on an icon of Saint John the Baptist created by parishioner and iconographer Pete Mihalopoulos. Those drops became streams of a fragrant yellow oil that continued to flow from the icon for months and years afterward, attracting thousands of visitors from across the country who came to venerate the icon and be anointed with the oil. Word spread through the Chicago Tribune and national media, drawing pilgrims of many faith backgrounds, including Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics, to the modest brick building on Homer Glen's south side. A number of visitors reported physical healings they attributed to the icon's intercession. Pete Mihalopoulos himself, who had anointed himself with the oil before hip replacement surgery in November 2015, was among those who testified to the grace they experienced.
