History
Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Louisville, Kentucky was founded in 1925 by a group of Greek immigrants who had made the Derby City their home and sought to preserve their Orthodox Christian faith and Hellenic heritage on the banks of the Ohio River. The original church occupied one of two shotgun houses on Fifth Street in the Old Louisville neighborhood, a humble beginning that was common to so many Greek Orthodox communities established by immigrant laborers in the early decades of the twentieth century.
For more than four decades the Fifth Street location served the Louisville Greek Orthodox faithful, until by 1967 the growing community completed construction of a proper Orthodox church building at the same location, replacing the original shotgun house structures with a permanent sanctuary that stood as a visible expression of the community's growth and permanence in Louisville. That building served the parish for nearly four decades more, until in 2004 the decision was made to relocate to a new and larger campus more accessible to the parish's members who had spread across the Louisville metropolitan area. The community moved to its present location at 930 Ormsby Lane and began constructing a new church and parish facilities, completing the transition to a campus worthy of the ancient tradition it carries.
The parish has evolved from its Greek immigrant origins into what its own members describe as a true cross-section of America, welcoming Orthodox Christians of many backgrounds and a growing number of converts drawn to the fullness of the ancient faith. The annual Louisville Greek Fest draws the broader community to the Ormsby Lane campus each year for Greek food, music, and the warmth of Hellenic hospitality in the heart of Kentucky.
