History

Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis, Indiana was founded through the vision and determination of a group of Orthodox Christians who recognized the need for a second Greek Orthodox parish in the heart of the city, distinct from the established Holy Trinity Cathedral in Carmel serving the northern Indianapolis suburbs.

In January 2006, the Genesis Orthodox Group was formed with the express purpose of starting a new Greek Orthodox church in central Indianapolis. For two years the group organized, gathered information, and built its case for a new parish. In January 2008, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit formally recognized the Genesis Orthodox Group as an official Ad Hoc Committee tasked with preparing the materials necessary to establish a new church. In February 2009, the group received notification that its request to organize a new parish had been granted. On April 7, 2009, Metropolitan Nicholas installed the Interim Board and granted the charter to Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis, giving the community its formal ecclesiastical standing.

A lease with Northwood Christian Church at 4550 North Central Avenue was signed in April 2009, and on May 10, 2009, Holy Apostles celebrated its first Divine Liturgy, with services held every other week in the borrowed chapel space. The parish has grown steadily from those early biweekly gatherings, establishing itself as the Orthodox Christian presence in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood of central Indianapolis and welcoming Orthodox Christians of many backgrounds alongside cradle Greek Orthodox faithful.
