History

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Hammond, Indiana was organized in 1936 by families of Hellenic ancestry who had settled in Hammond and the surrounding Calumet Region of Northwest Indiana. The Calumet Region, with its sprawling steel mills and industrial corridor along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, had drawn immigrants from across Europe in the early twentieth century, and among them were Greek families who brought their Orthodox Christian faith to one of America's most heavily industrialized landscapes.

From its founding the parish has served as the spiritual and cultural anchor for the Greek Orthodox community of Northwest Indiana, offering the Divine Liturgy in Greek and English and nurturing the Hellenic heritage of its members through education, fellowship, and community life. Over the decades the parish has grown and evolved, and while it was mostly founded by families of Greek ancestry, it has long welcomed Orthodox Christians of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, reflecting the broad and inclusive vision of Orthodoxy in America.

Today, Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church stands at 7021 Hohman Avenue in Hammond as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, continuing to minister to Orthodox Christians throughout the Calumet Region for nearly nine decades and welcoming all who seek to worship Christ in the ancient Orthodox Christian tradition.
