History
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit in Rochester, New York was established in 1995, when approximately fifty families who desired a more intimate spiritual experience and closer pastoral care came together with a shared vision. They were granted permission to operate first as a mission and were subsequently recognized as an official parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, under the Metropolis of Detroit.
In 1998 the young community entered its present location, the former South Avenue Baptist Church, a building that the parish transformed for Orthodox Christian worship through the construction of an iconostasis and the placement of icons throughout the altar area. What had once served a different Christian tradition became a sanctuary devoted to the ancient liturgical and sacramental life of the Orthodox Church.
From its founding, Holy Spirit has carried a distinctive mission within the broader Orthodox community of western New York: to promote the spiritual well-being of those committed to the Greek Orthodox faith and traditions, while reaching out to all Orthodox Christians, converts, partners in interfaith marriages, and the unchurched Orthodox of the greater Rochester area. That outward-facing vision has shaped a parish drawn from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to full participation in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church through worship, service, and community fellowship.
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit at 835 South Avenue in Rochester serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the greater Rochester area as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a family-centered community helping its members live the Orthodox faith to the fullest.
