History

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was founded in 1976 by a group of faithful and dedicated Orthodox families who had moved to the state capital and recognized the need for an Orthodox parish of their own. As one of the early members expressed it, more prophetically perhaps than he may have realized at the time, God wants there to be a church here. For many years before a dedicated building existed, the Baton Rouge community was served by a priest traveling from New Orleans one Saturday a month to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, a testament to the desire of those early families to sustain their Orthodox faith in a city then without its own parish.

A decade after the founding, the dream of a permanent home was realized. The church building was dedicated on April 4, 1987, at 2510 North Stevendale Road, giving the Baton Rouge community its own house of worship for the first time. The icons of the iconostasis were painted in Greece, and many additional icons and sacred furnishings were donated by relatives and friends from New Orleans, Greece, and other parts of the United States, reflecting the broad network of support that helped build the Baton Rouge church from its very beginnings.

The parish has weathered the trials that Louisiana communities know well. Following Hurricane Katrina in September 2005, Archbishop Demetrios of America, Metropolitan Alexios, and Bishop Andonios visited Holy Trinity, offering pastoral care and solidarity as the broader Gulf Coast community reeled from the catastrophe. A decade later, the Great Flood of 2016 again tested the parish, which rebuilt with the support of the Metropolis of Atlanta and the Philoptochos of sister parishes.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 2510 North Stevendale Road in Baton Rouge serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the greater Baton Rouge area as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, its doors open to all as a house of prayer for all peoples.
