History
The origins of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church of Santa Barbara, California date to the early 1900s, when several Greek immigrants made their way to the coastal city and established themselves in local businesses, putting down roots in a community that would take them more than four decades to formalize into a parish. By the late 1930s, the Greek families of Santa Barbara dedicated themselves to founding an Orthodox house of worship to preserve their faith and pass it to their children.
On March 4, 1947, the Articles of Incorporation were filed and Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church formally became a parish. A 1946 group photograph of the proud founding parishioners standing in front of their first church building on Castillo Street captures the spirit of a community that had worked for years toward this moment. In February 1949, construction began on a new church building in front of the original structure on Castillo Street, and in 1950 the small church at 1124 Castillo Street was completed, giving the parish its permanent home in the early years of its life and serving as the cultural and spiritual center for the Santa Barbara Greek community through the following decades.
As the parish continued to grow, plans were made for a larger and more permanent church on a new site. On October 12, 1986, Bishop Anthony presided over the Grand Opening of the new church building at 1205 San Antonio Creek Road. The building was consecrated twelve years later on October 4, 1998 by Archbishop Spyridon of America. The year prior to the consecration, the parish hosted a visit of historic significance when His All Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, came to Santa Barbara on November 8, 1997 while attending an environmental symposium in the city.
