By 1982 it had become clear that enough families in Downey and the surrounding southeast Los Angeles County communities were interested in establishing a Greek Orthodox church closer to home, and that year the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Downey was formally established. The parish first worshipped in spaces rented from Saint Mark's Episcopal Church several blocks north of its present location on Downey Avenue, a generous arrangement that allowed the young community to build its liturgical and parish life while working toward a permanent home of its own.
The long-held dream of a permanent sanctuary took shape in September 2000, when groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a new church building at 10830 Downey Avenue. Construction proceeded through the early 2000s, and the completed sanctuary was dedicated in September 2002, giving the parish the purpose-built house of worship it had worked toward for two decades.
