History
Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Prescott, Arizona traces its origins to late 1997, when a small mission church was formed in Prescott Valley and celebrated its first Divine Liturgy at the Prescott Valley Public Library. In May 2000 services moved to the offices of Dr. George Rizk in Prescott, and as the congregation continued to grow, the frequency and scale of worship expanded. On a cold January 13, 2001, the mission celebrated its first Divine Liturgy at the Monday Club in Prescott, a gathering space that provided room for worship, storage, and a kitchen, a significant step forward for the young community. A portable iconostasis was soon purchased, four large icons acquired, and a portable altar built, and on June 30 of that year the first Divine Liturgy with the new altar and iconostasis was celebrated, giving the growing mission its first properly appointed worship environment.
In 2003 the parish was incorporated and officially received under the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, giving it its canonical standing within the Archdiocese. The community continued to grow and move through several locations as it outgrew each space in turn, eventually settling at the Gurley Street location in 2008, where it quickly filled the new worship space. In September 2009 the parish was officially placed under the heavenly protection of Saint George the Great Martyr, receiving the patron saint whose name it now bears.
The community that has gathered at Saint George reflects the diverse character of Orthodox Christian life in twenty-first century Arizona: young and old, infants and retirees, cradle Orthodox and converts, people from Greek, Serbian, Romanian, Russian, and American backgrounds drawn together by the ancient faith. All services are conducted in English, and visitors from every background are welcomed with the warmth that has become the parish's hallmark.
