Saint George Orthodox Church of Yonkers, New York is a parish of the Vicariate for the Palestinian and Jordanian Orthodox Christian Communities within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community whose founding story is one of faith, perseverance, and remarkable resilience in the face of disaster.
The community held services for its early years at the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour in Rye, New York, under the pastoral care of Father Elias, as it worked toward establishing its own permanent home in Westchester County. The parishioners, whose roots trace primarily to Palestine and Jordan, brought with them the ancient Orthodox Christian tradition of the Holy Land, a faith stretching back to the earliest centuries of the Church in the very land where Christ walked. They gathered with the determination to build a church that would reflect both that ancient heritage and their new life in the United States.
The community completed construction of its church building in Yonkers, only to face a devastating trial on December 12, 2023, just one week before the original planned opening date, when fire destroyed much of the building. Confronted with the ruin of years of labor and sacrifice, the parish community responded not with despair but with renewed commitment. The parish rebuilt, and on October 12, 2024, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America presided over the Divine Liturgy of Consecration at the restored Saint George Orthodox Church, gifting the parish with a silver censer and a relic of Saint George, one of the rarest relics in Christendom. Holy Relics of New Martyrs from the island of Samothrace were interred within the Holy Altar. Parishioners welcomed the Archbishop with bagpipes, zaghrouta ululations, and traditional Jordanian gifts of coffee, dates, and a keffiyeh, honoring both the occasion and their own cultural heritage.
