History
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Baltimore, Maryland was born out of a community's growth and a neighborhood's deepening sense of identity. By the early 1950s, a substantial concentration of Greek families had settled in the southeastern Baltimore neighborhood of Highlandtown, drawn in waves that included immigrants from the Greek mainland and from the islands of Chios and Rhodes. For years these families had made the journey to the Church of the Annunciation, Baltimore's founding Greek Orthodox parish established in 1906, but the distance was becoming a genuine hardship for large families traveling in inclement weather. The Annunciation had already granted permission and funds for an afternoon Greek school to serve the Highlandtown community, and a young assistant priest had helped cultivate a vibrant youth ministry there, including a basketball team that competed successfully in regional tournaments. The sense of community that grew around these young people made it increasingly clear that Highlandtown deserved a parish of its own.
After careful deliberation across the entire Baltimore Greek Orthodox community, the decision was made to proceed. On September 14, 1952, the Feast Day of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, twelve men gathered in the old Highlandtown Greek School building at the present site of Saint Nicholas Church. They discussed and formulated plans to establish the second Greek Orthodox parish in Baltimore. The twelve founders were William Apostolou, Athanasios Demetriades, Stamatios Diakides, Bill Eliades, Kostas Lambros, Demetrios Latgis, Kostas Loukas, Euripides Papachristou, Soterios Plakitses, George Sideropoulos, Vasilios Venos, and Stylianos Xintas. The following day they officially founded and incorporated the Parish of Saint Nicholas.
Two significant gifts marked the parish's beginning. The Church of the Annunciation transferred to the new parish the title to the Highlandtown Greek School building and the land on which it stood, providing an immediate home. Archbishop Michael of North and South America granted the new parish its Archdiocesan Charter. The church building itself was constructed in 1953, and the parish quickly became a spiritual and cultural anchor for the growing Greek community of southeast Baltimore. By 1973 a school building had been completed, with carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and other craftsmen, most of them parishioners, donating their labor without pay to finish the work.
Saint Nicholas has grown into the heart of what is now known as Baltimore's Greektown, a neighborhood the city officially recognized by that name in the late 1980s after residents petitioned for it. The parish hosts the annual Greek Folk Festival, the largest such festival in Maryland, and participates in the Greek Independence Day Parade. In 2015, Saint Nicholas received the Maryland Traditions ALTA Award in the category of Place, a recognition of the church's deep roots in Baltimore's cultural heritage.
Today, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church serves the faithful of Greektown and the broader Baltimore region at 520 South Ponca Street as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey, a community that has been the spiritual, cultural, and communal center of Greek Baltimore for more than seventy years.
