History
Saint Porphyrios Greek Orthodox Mission of Jacksonville, North Carolina has its roots in the military community surrounding Camp Lejeune, one of the largest Marine Corps installations in the world. For many years the Orthodox faithful in the area gathered for worship in a chapel on the military base, a chaplaincy arrangement that served the Marines and sailors stationed there but limited access to Orthodox Christians living in the surrounding civilian community. Recognizing that a base chapel could not fulfill the mission of a parish open to all, plans were set in motion to establish a permanent off-base home for the community.
In 2019, a parish council was established and the effort to move off base began in earnest. The mission was organized and named under the omophorion of Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta and guided by Bishop Sevastianos of Zela beginning in November 2020, giving the community its formal ecclesiastical standing as Saint Porphyrios Greek Orthodox Mission Church. The parish takes its name from Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalivia, the twentieth-century Greek Orthodox monk and spiritual father of the Holy Mountain of Athos who reposed in 1991 and was formally glorified as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2013, beloved throughout the Orthodox world for his wisdom, humility, and profound love for God and his fellow man.
From its new off-base location the mission has grown steadily, drawing Orthodox Christians not only from Jacksonville but from New Bern, Morehead City, Emerald Isle, Sneads Ferry, Richlands, Swansboro, and other communities across coastal North Carolina, as well as catechumens and inquirers drawn to the ancient faith for the first time.
