History

Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Upland, California was established in the early 1980s to bring the ancient Orthodox Christian faith to the Inland Empire, the rapidly growing communities east of Los Angeles along the Interstate 10 corridor. The first services were held at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church in Upland, with thirty to forty Greek Orthodox Christian families gathering immediately upon the mission's formation, served by Father Leon Pachis and other priests in the area.

In 1982 the community purchased its permanent property at 1391 Chaffee Street in Upland, a location ideally situated a mile north of Interstate 10 and a little over a mile from Ontario Airport, accessible to Orthodox Christians across the Inland Empire. In 1983, His Grace Bishop Anthony came to Upland for the naming of the new church, presiding over a ceremony in which the community chose from among several patron saint candidates including Saint George, Saint Andrew, and Saint Demetrios. The name Saint Spyridon was selected in recognition of the highest monetary contribution made toward the parish, offered by Maria Colas of Claremont, whose generosity gave the community its patron in the beloved fourth-century Bishop of Trimythous. In 1987, Father George Manneh was appointed by Bishop Anthony as the parish's first full-time priest, completing the transition from mission to established parish.
