History
Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church of Glenview, Illinois was born out of a simple but pressing need. In the winter of 1958, a group of Greek Orthodox Christians living in Chicago's northern suburbs gathered to discuss what they all recognized: there was no parish close to home. The State of Illinois formally recognized the community in 1959, and around that same time Sunday school classes began meeting at the Crow Island School in Winnetka, giving the youngest members of the community their first taste of Orthodox Christian education.
On March 25, 1960, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America granted the new community its ecclesiastical charter and worship services began. In 1963, groundbreaking and blessing of the site in Glenview took place with Bishop Meletios officiating, and on November 15, 1964, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the new sanctuary. The rapid growth that followed prompted the construction of a Community Center adjacent to the church, completed in 1974. On November 19, 1978, Archbishop Iakovos formally consecrated the sanctuary.
The parish's neo-Byzantine sanctuary was adorned over successive decades by some of the finest iconographers working in American Orthodox churches. John Terzis created the original iconostasis icons of Christ, the Theotokos, John the Baptist, and Saints Peter and Paul in 1964 and 1965. Sirio Tonelli, who would go on to create masterworks at parishes across the country, completed mosaics of the Virgin Mary Platytera in the apse and Saints Peter and Paul in the narthex in 1965 and 1966. In 2001, the dome was restored and enriched by George Filippakis with an icon of Christ as Pantokrator, the heavenly liturgy, a procession of angels, and 17 different saints.
The parish also purchased a two-acre parcel of land in 1991 that became its north parking lot, and the Agape Preschool program launched around the turn of the millennium, now enrolling approximately 35 students across four classes including kindergarten. A consistent hallmark of Saints Peter and Paul since its founding has been the use of English in the Divine Liturgy, a commitment to accessibility that reflects the parish's broader identity as a welcoming community for Greek Orthodox Christians, Orthodox faithful of diverse ethnic backgrounds, couples in interfaith marriages, and those seeking to learn more about the faith.
