Falling Asleep of St. John the Theologian Feast Day

The Falling Asleep of St. John the Theologian is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as the commemoration of the peaceful death of St. John the Theologian, also known as St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. This feast day is celebrated on September 26 and remembers the life and legacy of one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ.

Who Was St. John the Theologian

St. John the Theologian was one of the Twelve Apostles and part of the inner circle of disciples closest to Christ, along with Peter and James. He is traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation.

Because of the deep theological insight in his writings, the Church honors him with the title “Theologian.”

The Beloved Disciple

In the Gospel accounts, John is often referred to as the “disciple whom Jesus loved.” He was present at many key moments in the ministry of Christ, including the Transfiguration and the Crucifixion.

According to the Gospel of John, Jesus entrusted the care of the Virgin Mary to John while He was on the Cross.

His Peaceful Departure

Unlike most of the apostles who suffered martyrdom, Church tradition teaches that St. John the Theologian lived to an old age. His death is therefore described as a “falling asleep,” reflecting a peaceful departure from earthly life.

He spent his later years in Ephesus, where he continued teaching and strengthening the Christian communities.
