Getting from Aegina to Thessaloniki

If you are heading to Thessaloniki from Aegina you are making your way to the second largest city in Greece in the north of the country, with a waterfront that stretches for kilometres past the White Tower, exceptional food and a history shaped by Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Greek influences.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Thessaloniki. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. A weekly ferry from Piraeus to Thessaloniki exists but takes around 27 to 28 hours stopping at multiple northern Aegean islands along the way. You may occasionally find a direct service but it is rare and at nearly two days at sea it is not worth it when flying takes just over an hour.

Getting there by air

Both Thessaloniki and Athens have airports. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Thessaloniki takes around 55 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travellers.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Thessaloniki. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, the ferry from Aegina already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive north via the E75 motorway to Thessaloniki, which takes around 5 to 6 hours from Athens.
