Getting from Agathonisi to Crete

If you are heading to Crete from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to the largest island in Greece, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has ancient Minoan sites, mountain gorges, excellent food and a coastline that stretches for hundreds of kilometres.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Crete. Getting there by sea means taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Rhodes, which takes around 6 to 8 hours, and then connecting to Crete by the overnight ferry from Rhodes to Heraklion, which takes around 9 to 12 hours. The total journey by sea takes the better part of two days but keeps you within the Aegean ferry network without going through Athens.

Getting there by air

Both Crete and the nearest airports to Agathonisi have connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Heraklion or Chania, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos and fly to Crete via Athens. It is the most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car and want to keep it with you, take the ferry from Agathonisi to Rhodes and board the overnight ferry to Crete from there.
