Getting from Agios Efstratios to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from a small island in the northern Aegean to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Greek island world. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Amorgos. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, which runs 4 times a week in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then flying to Athens and connecting to Amorgos by ferry from Piraeus. The Piraeus to Amorgos ferry runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.
Getting there by air
Agios Efstratios has no airport. The nearest airport is Lemnos. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then taking the ferry from Piraeus to Amorgos gives a total journey time of around 8 to 10 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, fly to Athens and take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, fly to Athens and take the conventional ferry from Piraeus to Amorgos, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
