Getting from Crete to Thassos
If you are heading to Thassos from Crete you are going to the greenest island in Greece, a place of pine forests that run almost to the waterline, marble quarries worked since antiquity and beaches that manage to be both beautiful and genuinely uncrowded. It sits just off the Macedonian coast near Kavala and has a loyal following among Greeks and northern European visitors who have been coming for years.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Crete to Thassos. The island is connected to the mainland only by short ferries from Kavala and Keramoti on the northern coast, with the Keramoti to Thassos trip taking around 40 minutes and running almost hourly. Getting to either port from Crete means flying first.
Getting there by air
Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala, around 30 kilometres from the Keramoti ferry port. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes and then Athens to Kavala takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, followed by a taxi to Keramoti and the short ferry to Thassos. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours. A direct Heraklion to Kavala service may also be available seasonally so check before routing through Athens.
Your best option
Fly to Kavala via Athens and take a taxi to Keramoti for the short ferry to Thassos. If the direct Heraklion to Kavala service is running for your dates, take it and save the Athens connection. The Keramoti to Thassos ferry runs almost hourly and you rarely need to wait more than an hour for the next boat.
