Getting from Mykonos to Rafina

Rafina is Athens' second ferry port and for most people it is simply a transit point rather than a destination. It sits on the eastern Attica coast around 33 kilometres from central Athens and about 15 minutes from Athens International Airport, which makes it the most convenient port in Greece if you are flying in or out of the capital. The town itself is pleasant enough, with a waterfront lined with good seafood restaurants that Athenians have been coming to for decades, but the reason most people are here is to catch or disembark from a ferry.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry between Mykonos and Rafina and it runs year round. Fast Ferries, Golden Star Ferries and Seajets all operate on this route with crossings taking between 2 and 4.5 hours depending on the vessel. High speed ferries run in the summer and conventional ferries cover the route through the quieter months. In peak season there are up to 7 daily departures so finding a convenient time is rarely a problem. Book ahead in July and August.

What about flying?

Rafina does not have its own airport but Athens International Airport is around 15 kilometres away, making it the closest port to the airport in the Athens area. Flying from Mykonos to Athens and then travelling to Rafina by taxi or bus takes around 1.5 to 2 hours total and is a practical option if you are connecting onwards by ferry from Rafina.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry. It is one of the better connected routes from Mykonos and the Rafina port is compact and easy to navigate. If you are heading to Athens city centre from Rafina, buses and taxis run regularly into the city and the journey takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
