Getting from Rhodes to Ikaria

If you are heading to Ikaria from Rhodes you are making your way to an island in the northeastern Aegean, considerably further north and in a different part of the Greek island world.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Rhodes to Ikaria running 1 to 2 times a week year-round, with the trip taking around 8 hours. The Dodekanisos Express high-speed catamaran also serves the route and takes considerably less time, though it runs less frequently than the main ferry. Both connect the two islands without going through Athens. Check the schedule before planning around it and build your travel dates around the available departures.

Getting there by air

Both Rhodes and Ikaria have airports. Flying from Rhodes to Athens takes around 1 hour and then Athens to Ikaria takes around 50 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly via Athens if time matters. At around 3 to 4 hours total it is considerably faster. If you want the sea journey and have the time, the direct ferry or the seasonal Dodekanisos Express are both good options and save going through Athens entirely.
