Getting from Rhodes to Patmos

If you are heading to Patmos from Rhodes you are making your way to an island further north in the Dodecanese group. It is where John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelation and the 11th century monastery of Saint John the Theologian above Chora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Rhodes to Patmos running several times a week year-round, taking around 5 to 7 hours. Faster vessel options are also available seasonally, taking considerably less time. Both connect the two islands without going through Athens. Check the schedule before planning around it and build your travel dates around the available departures.

Getting there by air

Patmos has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Kos. Flying from Rhodes to Athens takes around 1 hour and then Athens to Leros takes around 50 minutes, followed by the ferry from Leros to Patmos taking around 1 hour. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry if the schedule works and you have the time. It connects the two islands without going through Athens. If time matters, fly via Athens to Leros and take the short ferry across to Patmos.
