About the Beach

Agios Ioannis is a long and impressive beach on the western coast of Ithaca, known for its deep blue water and the dramatic cliffs that rise behind the shore. The beach is primarily pebbled and offers a very open and wide view of the sea toward the neighboring island of Kefalonia. Because it faces west, it is one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset over the water. It is a very quiet and unorganized beach, attracting those who enjoy a more rugged and natural swimming experience. The water is cool, fresh, and gets deep quickly, making it a favorite for strong swimmers. There is a sense of scale and power here that is very different from the sheltered eastern coves. It is a beautiful and honest destination that captures the wild and untamed side of the Ionian coastline.
