About the Beach
Kato Zakros Beach is a peaceful and rocky beach way out on the eastern edge of Crete that sits right at the end of a big hiking trail called the Gorge of the Dead which gets its name because people a long time ago used the caves in the cliffs for special ceremonies. It is very special because the ruins of a massive ancient Minoan palace are sitting right next to the shore, so you can look at history and then jump into the deep blue water to cool off after exploring the old stone walls. There are just a few small restaurants where you can sit and watch the fishing boats, and the whole place feels like a quiet hideout at the very end of the island where the stars are very bright at night because there are no big city lights nearby.
