History

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation was established in Modesto, California in 1930, making it one of the earliest Greek Orthodox parishes in the Central Valley. The first church was located on 6th and I Streets in downtown Modesto, serving Orthodox Christians across a wide geographic area from Merced to Manteca, Twain Harte to Patterson. As the parish grew rapidly, the community relocated to its present address on Tokay Avenue in 1957, where the church complex was built through the generosity of its parish families.

 

Over the following decades the community continued to invest in the beauty and depth of its worship space. In 1989 the parish undertook a major renovation of the church interior, transforming it into a Byzantine house of worship. Icons depicting the life of the Virgin Mary were installed in the Narthex in 1995, and in 1998 iconography covering the entire ceiling of the church, depicting the Life of Jesus Christ, was completed. Subsequent years brought further enrichment: additional sanctuary iconography in 2003, a mosaic of the Annunciation installed over the church entrance in 2005, sixty icons placed on the walls of the nave that same year, and choir loft iconography completed in 2010. Byzantine chandeliers were added in 2017, continuing a tradition of steady beautification spanning more than three decades.

 

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 313 Tokay Avenue in Modesto serves more than 350 stewardship families across the Central Valley as a multi-ethnic parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, a community whose ministry and development continue to unfold to the glory of God nearly a century after its founding.
