History

Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church of South Bend, Indiana was founded through the faithful and diligent efforts of forty-five Greek immigrant families who had settled in South Bend in the early decades of the twentieth century. On September 12, 1926, the first Divine Liturgy of Saint Andrew's was held in a renovated Saint Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church at 418 West Jefferson Boulevard and South William Street, giving the South Bend Greek community its first dedicated house of Orthodox worship.

From those beginnings the parish built its institutional life steadily. The cornerstone of a brick building attached to the south side of the church was laid on October 14, 1929, providing space for Sunday School classes and a Greek language class named Pythagoras. The lower level, known as Ahepa Hall, served as a meeting room for the AHEPA chapter and as a social gathering space for the parish. A chapel named Panagia and a vestry were constructed abutting the east wall of the original church, rounding out the parish's first campus.

As the years passed and the congregation grew, the Jefferson Boulevard location could no longer accommodate the expanding community. In 1956 the parish purchased the Grace Methodist Church at 760 South Michigan Street and renovated it for Orthodox worship, celebrating the first Divine Liturgy there on June 24, 1956. The Bishop Philotheos Library was established during the parish's years at this second home, enriching the community's educational life. Continued growth through the 1960s and 1970s made it clear that even larger quarters were needed, and in the mid-1970s the decision was made to build an entirely new facility on property purchased on North Ironwood Road, where the parish has worshipped ever since.

In October 2021, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accompanied by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago, visited Saint Andrew and celebrated a Doxology with the community, one of the most historic moments in the parish's nearly century-long life. In 2026 Saint Andrew celebrated its 100th anniversary with a series of festive events honoring the founding generation's faith and sacrifice.

Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church at 52455 North Ironwood Road in South Bend serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of northern Indiana as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community with deep ties to the University of Notre Dame and the broader Michiana region.
