History

Greeks are on record in San Joaquin County as early as the 1870 census, making the Stockton area one of the earliest points of Greek settlement in California. The great wave of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries brought more Greek families to the county, and by the 1920s a sufficient number had established themselves in Stockton to begin organizing their community life. In the early 1920s an organization called the Adelfotis was formed by young families and many single people to preserve their spiritual, ethnic, and linguistic identity and heritage, a society that laid the groundwork for the parish that would follow. The Order of AHEPA was organized in Stockton in the early part of 1929, further strengthening the institutional life of the Greek community.

The parish of Saint Basil was officially established at a General Assembly meeting of the parishioners and recognized as a religious organization under the laws of the State of California, with that founding recognized in the official documents placed in the cornerstones of the community's successive houses of worship. From the very beginning, the parish drew its faithful not only from Stockton but from the surrounding communities of Tracy, Manteca, and Lodi in San Joaquin County, reflecting the agricultural and commercial character of the Central Valley Greek community whose members spread across the valley floor. The earliest baptism on record in Stockton, preserved in the baptismal records of the Holy Trinity Church in San Francisco, was performed by Father Constantine Chapralis on May 18, 1908, and the earliest recorded wedding followed in 1910, both testifying to the deep roots of Orthodox sacramental life in the county long before the parish itself was formally established.

The present church complex at 920 West March Lane was the third building in the parish's history, its gold dome a recognizable landmark on the Stockton skyline and its interior adorned with mosaic icons, a distinctive choice unique among Greek Orthodox churches in America. In 2009 the parish received relics of Saint Basil the Great from the island of Cyprus, connecting the Stockton community tangibly to the fourth-century Archbishop of Caesarea whose name it bears. The annual Stockton Greek Festival, held each September on the church grounds, has grown into one of San Joaquin County's most beloved community events, drawing the broader region to share in Hellenic food, music, dance, and the warmth of a parish that has served the Central Valley for more than ninety years.
