History
Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Perth Amboy, New Jersey was founded in 1917, making it one of the first Greek Orthodox churches established in central New Jersey. The Greek immigrants who chose Perth Amboy as their hometown formed a congregation that year and, six years later, built their very first church on the corner of High Street and Center Street in 1923. A small group of dedicated women from the parish's earliest days took on the work of maintaining the new little church themselves, cleaning and polishing, sewing and embroidering, cooking and delivering meals to newly arrived families from Greece until they were established in their new country. Their efforts were the foundation on which the parish's Philoptochos Society would formally be organized, becoming members of the national organization in 1935 with Mrs. Georgia Campos as its first president.
About thirty years after the High Street church was built, the growing community constructed a new and more spacious church at its present address on Wisteria Street and Sadowski Parkway, the house of worship that the parish calls home today. Known affectionately as the Church by the Bay, the church sits close to the Raritan Bay, a setting that reflects the waterfront character of Perth Amboy itself.
In October 2017, the parish celebrated its centennial with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy officiated by Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, a gala luncheon, and the premiere performance of a choral tribute to Saint Demetrios composed specifically for the occasion. For third-generation parishioners who gathered that day, it was an occasion to honor the grandparents and great-grandparents who had built the community from nothing and to commit to carrying their legacy forward.
Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 41-47 Wisteria Street in Perth Amboy serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Middlesex County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community more than a century old that has preserved the faith and Hellenic heritage of its founding families through every generation that has followed.
