History

Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church of Beaverton, Oregon was founded in 1997 by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco to minister to Orthodox Christians on the west side of metropolitan Portland, a part of the rapidly growing Portland metropolitan area that had long been served only by the Holy Trinity Cathedral in northeast Portland. The decision to establish a westside parish reflected both the geographic expansion of the Portland area and the Metropolis's recognition that Orthodox Christian communities needed to be accessible to the faithful wherever they lived.

From its founding the parish has carried a clear mission: to foster the spiritual maturity of the Orthodox Christian faithful and to reach out to inquirers, the unchurched, and inactive Orthodox on the west side of Portland through worship, the sacramental life, education, philanthropy, hospitality, and fellowship. That outward-facing vision has produced a congregation in which approximately sixty percent of the adult members are converts to the Orthodox Christian Faith, drawn from Protestant, Catholic, and other backgrounds who discovered in Orthodoxy the fullness of the ancient Christian tradition. All services are conducted in English, with some hymns sung in Greek, making the liturgical life of the Church fully accessible to the diverse community that gathers at Saint John's each Sunday.

The parish is also the host of Portland's only Orthodox Christian school, Agia Sophia Academy, currently offering pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, and operates the Logos Bookstore, one of the few dedicated Orthodox Christian bookstores in the Pacific Northwest. In February 2025, the parish voted unanimously to purchase a 5.9-acre property on NE Walker Road in Hillsboro, the future site of a purpose-built Byzantine-style church designed to accommodate 400 worshippers in a structure that blends recognizably Orthodox architectural forms with the timber construction traditions of the Pacific Northwest.
