History

Saint Philothea Greek Orthodox Church traces its beginnings to a small gathering of Orthodox Christian faithful in the greater Athens, Georgia area who recognized the need for a local parish to serve the communities of Oconee County and surrounding northeast Georgia. The parish is dedicated to Saint Philothea of Athens, a sixteenth-century noblewoman who devoted her considerable wealth to the care of the poor and the redemption of women enslaved by the Ottoman Turks, and who was martyred for her faith in 1589, her feast day celebrated on February 19.

 

The community that formed around her name has grown into one of the most diverse Greek Orthodox parishes in the Metropolis of Atlanta, drawing its forty-seven families from American, Greek, Romanian, Eritrean, Russian, Bulgarian, Albanian, and African American backgrounds, a gathering of peoples united in the ancient Orthodox Christian faith regardless of ethnic origin. Services are held on a full weekly cycle including Wednesday evening Vespers, weekday Divine Liturgies, and Sunday Orthros and Divine Liturgy, reflecting the parish's commitment to the fullness of Orthodox liturgical life as the center of its common existence.
