History

Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church serves as the only Greek Orthodox parish in the greater Syracuse area, the sole center of Hellenic Orthodox community life in one of upstate New York's largest cities. Located in the suburb of DeWitt on the border of Syracuse near Syracuse University, the parish draws its faithful from across the region, providing Orthodox Christians of every background with a spiritual home in central New York.

 

The parish is dedicated to Saint Sophia, the personification of Holy Wisdom, and her three daughters, Faith, Hope, and Love, second-century martyrs whose feast day is celebrated on September 17. The dedication connects the Syracuse community to one of the most ancient and beloved dedications in the Orthodox tradition, shared by the great Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, the Church of the Holy Wisdom that stood as the mother church of Eastern Christendom for nearly a thousand years.
