Getting from Antipaxos to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Antipaxos you are making your way from a tiny island in the Ionian Sea to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast, with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.

Take the ferry

There are no scheduled ferries from Antipaxos to Kavala. Antipaxos has no ferry port of its own and is accessible only by sea taxi from Gaios on Paxos. Getting to Kavala means taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Igoumenitsa and then driving east across northern Greece via the Egnatia motorway to Kavala, which takes around 4 to 5 hours from Igoumenitsa. This avoids Athens entirely and is a scenic route across northern Greece.

Getting there by air

Kavala has its own airport with connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Antipaxos has no airport either. Taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Corfu and flying to Thessaloniki and then driving to Kavala, which takes around 1.5 hours, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Corfu and fly to Thessaloniki, then drive to Kavala. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most practical approach. If you are planning to visit Thassos from Kavala, ferries to the island run almost hourly in summer. If you are traveling with a car, take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, ferry to Igoumenitsa and drive east via the Egnatia motorway to Kavala.
