Getting from Crete to Volos
If you are heading to Volos from Crete you are making your way to one of the most underrated cities in Greece, a proper working city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula with a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants and a position that makes it the departure point for ferries to the Sporades.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Crete to Volos. Volos is a mainland port connected to the Sporades rather than the southern Aegean ferry network. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight ferry from Crete to Piraeus and then travelling by road north to Volos, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens.
Getting there by air
Volos has its own small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with connections from Athens taking around 45 minutes. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes and then Athens to Nea Anchialos takes around 45 minutes, giving a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours. Check availability before planning around it as connections are limited.
Your best option
Fly to Athens and either take the connecting flight to Nea Anchialos if it is available, or drive or take the train to Volos, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens. The train through Thessaly on the approach to Volos is a good journey and worth taking if you are not in a hurry.
