Getting from Mykonos to Agathonisi
You're heading to one of the most remote and least visited islands in the Dodecanese. Agathonisi sits at the very northern tip of the island chain, closer to the Turkish coast and the islands of Samos and Patmos than it is to the main Dodecanese hubs further south. It is tiny, it is quiet and it is as far from the tourist circuit as you can get while still being part of Greece. A few small settlements, some good swimming spots, fishing boats in the harbour and a stillness that is increasingly hard to find in the Aegean. The people who go to Agathonisi are looking for exactly that and they find it.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Agathonisi. The connection goes via Piraeus and the total journey by sea is long, around 12 to 14 hours depending on the service. Agathonisi is at the end of a ferry route that runs through Patmos, Lipsi and Leros and connections are infrequent. Check the timetable carefully, plan your trip around the ferry schedule and build flexibility into your plans. Weather can affect sailings to smaller and more exposed islands like this one.
What about flying?
Agathonisi does not have an airport so flying directly to the island is not an option. The nearest airport is Samos, from where you may be able to find a ferry connection depending on the season. Alternatively flying to Kos via Athens and working your way up through the northern Dodecanese by ferry is the more reliable approach. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
Plan this one carefully. Agathonisi rewards the effort but the logistics require attention. Fly to Kos or Samos via Athens, find the ferry connection that works with your dates and build enough time into your itinerary to absorb any delays. Once you are there, none of that will matter.
