Getting from Mykonos to Antikythira

You're heading to one of the most remote and least visited islands in Greece. Antikythira sits between Kythira and Crete in the open sea, a small rocky island with a permanent population of around 20 to 30 people that holds on with a quiet stubbornness. It has no hotel, no tourist infrastructure and no reason to visit unless the idea of being somewhere that almost nobody goes is reason enough. The island became known to the wider world as the place where the Antikythera mechanism was discovered in 1900, the ancient Greek analogue computer that remains one of the most extraordinary archaeological finds in history. Beyond that it is simply a very small, very remote island at the edge of the Aegean.

Take the ferry

Antikythira is served by ferries on the Piraeus to Crete route that stop at Kythira and Antikythira on the way south. From Mykonos the connection goes via Piraeus and the total journey by sea is long, around 8 to 10 hours to Antikythira depending on the service. Ferries do not stop at Antikythira every day and the schedule is limited so check the timetable carefully, plan your trip around it and build significant flexibility into your plans. Weather can affect sailings to an island this exposed and this small.

What about flying?

Antikythira does not have an airport so flying directly to the island is not an option. The nearest airport is Kythira, from where you would need to find a ferry connection south to Antikythira. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

This one requires serious planning. Check the ferry schedule from Piraeus, find a sailing that stops at Antikythira and build your entire trip around it. Go with no expectations beyond the experience of being somewhere genuinely remote. There are very few places left in Greece this untouched and for the right kind of traveller that is the whole point.
