Getting from Mykonos to Thassos

Thassos is the northernmost island in Greece and one of the greenest, covered in pine and oak forests that run almost to the shoreline in places. It sits just off the coast of Macedonia in the northern Aegean, close enough to the mainland that the ferry crossing from Kavala takes around 35 minutes. It is a round island with a coastal road that circles the entire perimeter, white sandy beaches that rank among the best in northern Greece, an ancient capital with a well preserved agora and theatre and a local character shaped more by the northern mainland than by the Aegean island world further south. It is popular with Greek families and northern European visitors and tends to get overlooked by people doing the classic island circuit further south.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Thassos. Thassos is served exclusively by short crossings from the mainland ports of Kavala and Keramoti, with the Keramoti crossing taking around 35 minutes and running very frequently through the summer season. Getting there from Mykonos means flying to Kavala via Athens and then making your way to the ferry port for the short crossing across to Thassos.

What about flying?

Thassos does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Kavala, which is your gateway to the island however you approach it. The journey from Mykonos goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Kavala, with the ferry crossing to Thassos adding another 35 minutes at the end. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours door to door depending on your connection. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Fly to Kavala via Athens and take the short ferry crossing from Keramoti to Thassos. The crossing is one of the shortest in Greece and runs so frequently that you rarely need to book ahead for it. Hire a car or a scooter when you arrive and drive the coastal road around the island. Give yourself at least four or five days, get to the beaches on the west and south coasts and spend an evening in the old capital of Limenas with the ancient theatre above the town.
